A Curious Lass
By Tracy Rex
Once there was a curious lass who found a magic looking glass.
A portal to another world where battles raged and pipe smoke curled.
Where everything was a reflection and every thought became a question.
Where chess pieces and flowers talked about something called a Jabberwock.
And rabbits raced to meet their deadline.
And The Queen of Red made every headline.
Where hatters mad and cats of Cheshire told Alice stories of every measure.
Yes, Alice was the young girl’s name, and curiosity was her game.
She questioned every single thing and ended up in such a spin.
At every corner was a riddle, but not the kind to make you giggle.
This peculiar world was Wonderland, where often folks were quite offhand.
But, Alice was enthralled by it and grew to love each new visit.
But reader, I have jumped ahead. I’m sorry if you feel misled.
The looking glass was not the start of this adventure of the heart.
For long before the glass was found, Alice entered through the ground.
She crawled into a rabbit hole when life was seeming rather droll.
She longed to travel, see the world, not wait around to dance and twirl.
Her books became her one escape, and in her head a world took shape.
A snooze one day upon a tree and there she was quite suddenly
Among the characters she’d created in her dreams so well narrated.
She met a dodo and a walrus plus a sizeable oyster chorus.
She found a lock without a key and many treats labelled: ‘Eat me’.
She took advice from a caterpillar, which led to a party most peculiar
Where it was always ‘time for tea’ and a dormouse slept excessively.
A visit to the palace garden led to Alice seeking pardon.
A pack of cards and a stolen tart had angered her majesty Queen of Hearts.
A fearsome cry: ‘Off with her head’ sent Alice back to her leafy bed.
Once more awake next to the stream, she wondered, ‘Was it all a dream?’
